On Monday, August 11th, the Nebo School District fall athletes demonstrated the power of unity and service as five high schools, five sports teams, and five cities came together for an inspiring day of community service. With the support of the Utah Army National Guard, over 900 student-athletes participated in various service activities, showcasing their dedication to their communities and each other.
The Cross Country teams gathered bright and early at Salem Pond in Salem City. Armed with gloves and trash bags provided by the city, these athletes dedicated their efforts to cleaning along the pond, picking up trash, and enhancing the natural beauty of the area.
In Payson City, the Female Soccer teams took to the cemetery to clean headstones. With buckets, soap, and water supplied by the city, the athletes brought their own rags to lovingly tend to the memorials, honoring those who came before them.
Mapleton City saw the Female Tennis teams don gardening gloves to tackle the weeds around the fence line at 125 W 400 N. The athletes worked tirelessly, clearing the area and contributing to the city’s upkeep.
At the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds, the Football teams united to clean up trash and move rocks out of the way. The city provided trash bags, and the athletes brought their strength and teamwork to ensure the grounds were pristine and welcoming.
In Springville City, the Female Volleyball teams focused their efforts on the walking trail by the creek. Meeting at the parking lot by the HS softball field, they spread wood chips and cleaned the trail, enhancing the path for all who enjoy it.
This day of service was not only about giving back to the community but also about fostering respect and sportsmanship among athletes. The Utah Army National Guard shared a powerful message, reminding everyone that while rivalry can be fierce on the field, off the field, respect and good sportsmanship must prevail.
The presence of Olympians Clayton Young and Jared Ward was a highlight, as they joined the Cross Country teams for a district run, participated in service activities, and shared inspiring messages. Their involvement exemplified the spirit of giving and the importance of role models.
